What do you need? A Lawn Mower or Lawn Tractor or Garden Tractor?
A lawn mower is a simple device to cut the grass in small lawns. These can be towed or self propelling or ride-on type. Self propelling and “’Zero Turning Radius’ type Ride on Mowers” can be used on relatively large lawns with greater maneuverability. These suits when the ground is flat or have gentle undulations.
A lawn tractor is a mini Tractor for garden maintenance applications. This is required when 1) The lawn area is very large up to several acres, 2) The land is uneven or have unusually lush and thick grass. These are expensive but offer greater power of propulsion and cutting.
A lawn tractor can tow a sophisticated, fine cutting reel mower in golf course besides it can take many rear-hitch appliances like tiller, rotary cutters, rakers and other garden attachments. These also handle front mounted hydraulic equipment like back hoe, bull dozer blades etc., which can be operated by the tractor’s hydraulic system.
Unlike mowers, these can negotiate undulations due to better suspension system. Due to the inherent versatility it is very well suited for sophisticated and large gardens with lawns.
Lawn Tractors were recommended, when grass cutting is the prime purpose all others ancillary. On the other hand, a Garden Tractor with its characteristically large rear wheels is recommended when it also need to go through the whole hog of tilling, plowing and other field activities besides pulling heavy rotary lawn mowers.
These can pull, and operate by its own hydraulic arrangement , many ground engaging and rear hitching farm attachments. Equipped with full fledged suspensions, high powered multi cylinder diesel engines, obstacle mounting large wheels, air compressors etc., these are indeed modern work horses. Hence, house gardens generally do not warrant purchase of these expensive field machines.
